This is something that every retailer says, “We always strive to be different from the rest.” Well, we at Bringy Furniture really think we are. Let me tell you why.

Firstly, in a world of multinational, faceless companies, after nearly forty five years of trading, we are still a family owned and run independent furniture retailer. When you visit our shop, you will meet familiar faces from your previous visits as we have a sales force of five mature people, all of whom have been with the company for many years.

The Managing Director (Tim) of the company only buys furniture that he feels offers quality, choice and value for money. On this basis, he is therefore happy to only put certain ranges in our showroom. He knows he has to get this right as he often works in the showroom and if there any problems, he often has to deal with them!

We concentrate on quality furniture at a fair price, fantastic choice and great service, even AFTER we have delivered the furniture (unlike, sadly, many of our competitors). We have an excellent reputation locally, hard won, which we cherish and work diligently to keep.

If by any small chance a customer experiences any kind of problem, all the staff are happy to help remedy the problem as they are all aware that a customer with a problem, well remedied, is the perfect advert for our business. Indeed, Bringy Furniture do not advertise as all our customers are either returning (some third generation now starting to make an appearance!) or from recommendation.

We are well positioned for easy access, being 1.5 miles outside Chelmsford, just off the A12 at junction 17. We are open seven days per week and have ample free parking.

How to choose the right wood for your furnitureDepending on the furniture, you undoubtedly need to choose the right kind of wood since it provides beauty and elegance to your fixtures. There are certain characteristics which you will also need to consider when choosing the right wood for your furniture.

Generally, woods by nature are known to be resilient and sturdy because of their features. Their structure contains heterogeneous, hygroscopic, and anisoptric materials and their cell walls are composed of micro fibrils, cellulose and hemicelluloses permeated with lignin, all held together by cementing properties.

Though trees are basically known to mankind as one of the sturdiest living organisms here on the planet, furniture makers still need to see and consider what wood to use when building a piece of furniture because some of them are very hard which are good for fixtures while some of them are apposite for curvatures.

Normally, carpenters and wood workers segregate those lumbers that are good in quality and appearance and are reserve them for furniture while common lumbers that have flaws are used for general purposes. All in all, there are 16 types of wood that are sturdy enough for furniturecrafting. However, not all of them are appropriate because the characteristics vary from wood to wood, including their texture, color, durability, and usage.

The most commonly used wood for furniture is Mahogany. Because of its reddish brown color and its ability to resist enlargement, dwindling and distortion, it is widely used for quality fittings such as cabinets, boat construction and wood facings regardless of its expensive price. Other types of wood which have similar characteristics except for its color are the following: Walnut, Oak, Rosewood, Teak, Shesham, and Pine.

For outdoor use, Redwood is highly recommended because of its distinctive features. Being light and having a comparatively high resistance to decay, this wood is good for making outdoor fixtures, interior finishing, veneering and paneling.

Further, for general purpose items such as ladders, plywoods, and construction lumber, it is recommended to use Cedar, Hemlock, Softwood, Maple, Walnut, Cherry, and Fir as these lumbers are good enough for these purposes. For vehicles and ships, Spruce is widely used for making masts and spars for ships, aircrafts, crate boxes, and general millwork.

Although most furniture are made from the kinds of wood mentioned above, there are still other types of wood that are used in furniture making, and they are Alder, Apple, Aspen, Chestnut, Cottonwood, Cypress, Pear-wood, Tupelo and Willow, that can also be classified as wood for general purpose.

In the end, however, people will still have to look out for the characteristics of each of the different kinds of wood because this will give them a rough idea about the few different kinds of wood that are most suitable for their needs. For example, furniture for indoor use can be made using one type of wood, which will not be good enough for outdoor use. Choosing the right wood for your furniture requires some research and learning. Using your research data and other expert inputs on the types of wood is the best way to find the right kind of wood for your furniture.

We have all walked around a furniture store, or an antique shop and have clearly seen that a collection of nice furniture pieces does not necessarily create a nice room.Buying furniture piece by piece, just because you like them, is going to give your living room the same effect. Unfortunately, there are a few more considerations to take into account when choosing your new furniture than just what catches your eye. After all, furniture is expensive and hopefully will last a long-time, so you need to choose the right pieces to enhance your home.

An initial appraisal: Stand back and look at what you are working with. Some things cannot be changed, such as the age and style of your property.

Some things may not be cost-effective to change, such as carpets or flooring. Mahogany furniture looks rich on a light coloured carpet, but is lost on a dark brown carpet or tiles. Some things can easily be changed, for example the colour of the walls, so try to look beyond what is currently there but temporary.

Analyse in your mind what sort of style will be in keeping with your home. Is it a Victorian property, with large rooms, high ceilings and ornate cornices? Or is it a modern purpose-built Pied-a-Terre in a loft style design with floor-to-ceiling glass? Heavy mahogany furniture would look incongruous here, just as all-glass furniture would not easily complement an antique home.

The Range of Materials: Along with the age and style of the property, consider what type of materials would look good in your room. Rules are made to be broken, so nothing is taboo, but mixing antique with modern, or dark oak with stainless steel takes a little ingenuity and creativity to get it right. A pine refectory table beneath a chandelier may work in certain rooms, but generally would be considered inappropriate and unsuitable.

Antique or traditional-style furniture comes mainly in solid wood, and has carving, heavy or delicate, depending on the era. Look at all the options in www.crawleysfurniture.co.uk before deciding on your preference. Mixing different woods can be difficult. Generally a good contrast is better than a bad match.

More modern furniture styles are made of a wide range of materials, from leather to chrome, and from glass to glossy coloured PVC. Modern furniture tends to blend into most settings, so if you plan to move home, it will always be a safer choice. The identity and focal point of the room can be created with a single designer piece of glassware or a dominating piece of modern art. Simple accents can make a statement about your style, without a lot of expense.

Room Size – No matter what style you choose, the size of the furniture is most important. Furniture needs to be bought to fit the scale of your room. A tiny dining set in the centre of a huge Victorian room will look lost, and will need a lot of accompanying furnishings to fill the gaps. On the other hand a gracious grandfather clock, cramped into a small flat, and scraping the ceiling will not make the room look grand, no matter how hard it tries. Buy everything in proportion to your room, and to your other furnishings, and be very aware of scale.

Age of Users – If you are furnishing a family home, with active young children, then buying the right furniture is a must if you are to keep your sanity. In the living areas at least, man-made materials or wood with a matt lacquered finish are preferable to hand-polished beeswaxed furniture. Everyday family furniture, especially tables, need to be practical and durable. They should be very stable, and easily wiped down with a damp cloth so that they outlast the wear and tear that will be inflicted upon them.

Finally, remember the analogy of the antique shop, and choose your furniture with an eye to the whole room to create a comfortable, pleasing atmosphere to suit your own personal karma.

Let the pages at Crawleys Furniture open up to show you a whole wealth of styles, modern and antique, that you can enjoy today, featuring Antique Furniture and Modern Furniture ranges.
