My friend Michelle found oak dining tables boring.

At least that’s what she said when she felt it was time to buy a new one. Until then, she and her family had used the table belonging to her grandmother. Michelle’s grandfather, so the story goes, fought as a paratrooper in World War 2. He and two British soldiers found themselves separated from their units, and were holed up in an old barn behind enemy lines, somewhere in France. With nothing but time, they talked about their families, showed pictures, and became good friends.

They also shared meals and played cards. The only piece of furniture in the barn was, you guessed it, the table that now stood in Michelle’s dining room.

Of course, in those days, it wasn’t near as elegant as today. I understand it wasn’t finished, and was little more than a board with legs. Still, when they were discovered by the Germans, this table was used as cover, so some of those nicks and dings might have come from German bullets!

Still, Michelle thought it was boring and was determined to give it to her sister as a wedding present. When I told her I thought she was crazy, she asked why I was so in love with oak.

I told her that oak just made more sense than anything else. It’s subtle and neutral, so it works in almost any environment. The same table that looks fantastic in a five-star restaurant would work equally well in a greasy mom and pop place.
