Do you know the specific term for the fabric covering on your sofa bed or armchair? Its name is “upholstery”, a word also used for the activity of encasing some furniture pieces with leather or cloth for optimum comfort or added elegance. The materials used for this purpose belong to two categories, which are synthetic and natural. To know more about these classifications, check out the following fibres commonly used by many manufacturing companies.
Plant
To come up with this type, most manufacturers break down their vegetation source (wherein the varieties widely used include hemp, cotton, flax, and nettle) to create fabric strands. Among the examples here, the second is highly popular, especially in producing apparel because of its breathable, soft, and comfortable properties. On the other hand, textile producers make linen from the third plant known for its smooth texture.
Man-Made
Also called synthetic, makers typically manufacture it by combining chemicals and natural fibres. Some of the common varieties available (especially for upholstery) are acrylic, acetate, nylon, and polyester. The best benefits about these materials are their durability, wrinkle and soil-resistance, and lesser price (in comparison to the former).
Suede
Like artificial fabric, this variety is also strong and resilient since manufacturers produce it using animal hide (usually from cows, donkey, and horse). If you are not familiar with this type, you can identify it through its velvety or slightly furry texture and smooth texture.
Other Natural Fibres
Silk is another widely produced material, created from weaving the cocoon of silkworms. Due to its high absorbency level, several companies soak it in various colours during the later part of its manufacturing process. Next in line is wool, which generally comes from sheep fleece. But, sometimes, fur from other animals (e.g. goats, llamas, and bear) is used.
Other than these examples here, you can find more types such as blended (derived from organic and synthetic varieties) and special (e.g. embroidered and velvet).
